Boating Families Located in Newburgh & Lathom in the 1901 Census.
Old Coal Carrying Boat (Wigan Coal Company Ltd) tied up at The Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
The 1901 census was taken on the night of Sunday 31st March 1901.
On the original entry below, the schedule is confused in that Richard Gregson has been entered on line 1 and then struckout, Henry Barrow senior has been then added in line 1 and Henry junior in line 2 and then these have both been struck leaving just Richard Gregson. This is because Henry and his son Henry, were not on board on the night of the census. Henry Barrow senior returned home to Newburgh and Henry junior went home to Kirkdale.
details:
Vessel "ADA MARY" Moored at Trafalgar Dock or Lock, Liverpool.
Henry Barrow Master Mar 50 Master B/P: Lancs, Newburgh.
Henry Barrow Mate Mar 24 Mate " Liverpool.
Richard Gregson Hand Wid 66 Ord Seaman " Newburgh.
The two Henry's are father & son and are my Gt and Gt, gt-grandfather's. The "Ada Mary" was a 79 ton Sailing Flat (Mersey Flat) used for coasting trade, Alan Barrow also a descendant of Henry senior has some items from this sailing flat which have the vessel's name scratched onto them.
And here we can see that Henry Barrow senior returned home to Newburgh on the night of the 1901 census.

Elizabeth Ashcroft was formerly Elizabeth BARROW, sister of Henry Barrow and daughter of John and Elizabeth Barrow (above). Also aunty of the above Mary Holt.
Elizabeth BARROW age 76 above is Elizabeth Ashcroft's mother not grandmother prob a mistake as status within the household would be as a grandmother.
