Many boating families lived on their barges and moored them along the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, some just stopping off for the night on route, others because they had homes or families living in the adjacent villages. These are some of the canal boats I have found moored at Newburgh and Lathom on the night the 1881 census was taken.
